No Fast-Track for Trade Deals That Only Benefit Corporations
CEOs and lobbyists are pushing President Obama and members of Congress to pass a Fast Track trade bill to pad their wallets at the expense of working families worldwide.
This bill would let massive trade deals like the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) be negotiated behind closed doors and sent to Congress for an up-or-down vote without any amendments, and with limited debate on how these deals could lead to more jobs being sent overseas, decreased consumer safety, increased wage inequality and fewer protections for the environment.
We’ve been down this rocky road before. Fast Track is the approach pioneered by Richard Nixon to get around our normal democratic checks and balances to push through trade deals, regardless of the effects they might have on wages, jobs, small businesses and the environment. With help from Fast Track, our elected officials brought us job-killers and corporate giveaways like NAFTA, CAFTA and the WTO. No trade deal, no matter how bad, has ever been defeated under Fast Track.
